A few weeks ago I rented the movie “Running the Sahara”. Its a movie about three ultra marathoners who decide to run the entire Sahara dessert in 111 days, essentially covering the distance of two full marathons every day. Sounds crazy right? Impossible even. It was a little of both. But it was also an epic story. The story that made me decide that I wanted to run an ultra. To test my body to see how much I can do and what I can accomplish. It was in a word inspiring.
The movie covers the story exceptionally well – from the fitness of the athletes, the preparation they had to do to before the trip, the political implications, etc. It also covers the emotions you go through on a journey like this, the highs and the lows. That was probably my favourite part of the story – seeing the runners at their best and their absolute worst. The raw emotion that shows up when you’re under that much stress. They also cover injuries, diet and the challenges of dealing with an unfamiliar climate.
Overall this is a great story and a fun movie to watch. For a documentary the story holds your attention very well and the time passes quickly. If you haven’t seen it and you enjoy movies about people, challenges and adventure I highly recommend it. It’s worth checking out.
